Cook At Kurnell, on the Kamay-Botany Bay foreshore, is the inspiration for our website’s forthcoming Astro-gastronomy category. This very quirky though modest outdoor cafe takes its name, with a hint of irony, from Lieutenant James Cook who, in 1770, stepped ashore onto Gweagal land not far from this site.
The cafe’s decor has an unambiguously surfing theme, with heritage surfboards, homemade outdoor furniture and a converted Kombi campervan for the kitchen. It also has an intriguingly multicultural history — notwithstanding the British imperial references in its name and address!
Although Cook At Kurnell is not normally open for stargazing, the nearby beach offers good views of the moon, stars, and planets on a clear night; and, if you’re still there at dawn, you might catch a good sunrise over the bay.
