This family-friendly walking track from the village of Woodford, in the City of Blue Mountains, is named for the 1874 Transit of Venus observations made nearby from a temporary encampment established on the site of the Woodford Academy.
Transits of Venus occur in pairs that are eight years apart, with a gap of 121.5 years between the pairs. The next pair will occur on 10–11 December 2117 and 8 December 2125.
The Australian View of Venus: astronomer Nick Lomb’s account of Australian observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus for ABC Science published on 28 May 2012 soon after the final Transit of the 21st century on 6 June 2012.
The Transit of Venus Walk is an opportunity to not only experience the geology and natural beauty of the Blue Mountains, but to also think about what we’ve learned about the universe since 1874 and comtemplate the extreme differences between our precious planet and ultra-toxic Venus, the planet which drew Captain James Cook, his crew and guests, into the Pacific Ocean to observe the Transit of 1769.
