Way back in the Devonian Period of our planet’s evolution, when Australia was part the supercontinent Pangea, hundreds of primitive fish were trapped in a billabong near the present-day site of Canowindra. The billabong dried up, the fish died, their bodies were covered by sediment, and, slowly, their remains were fossilised. Now, some 360 million years later, their fossils are on display in a purpose-built museum in this small IAT town in central-western New South Wales, where they tell a remarkable story about the evolution of life on Earth.
